A joint effort for a better future with LA21

Dear readers, I have no idea on where I should start, but as I try to write this professionally along with my passion towards sustainability, I can tell that the passion of the public towards the restoration of water quality of Sungai Bunus continues to burn bright in the darkest night – but the challenges began to grow stronger and difficult to cope. Sungai Bunus was regarded as the cradle of civilization for the city of Kuala Lumpur, guiding our communities in a passage of memories in the modern days. I’ve written about the celebration of World River Day on the previous issue of Green Plus, and I’ve stressed the importance on the need to create a much wider awareness spread to improve our water sources.

YB Datuk Haji Mohd Najib bin Haji Mohd, Executive Director of DBKL hosted the meeting with the members of LA21 recently in conjunction with the World River Day to address the needs and concerns with the River of Life programme. As more evidence began to unfold, a strategy is still in the midst of being devised for the concerns that are coming together.

In a drone filmed video presented during the meeting, the drone uncovered pollutions stagnating Sungai Bunus from Sri Rampai, Ayeh Leleh pond, Pulapol, Kampung Boyan and Kampung Baru, sourced from private contractors and local food stalls. One of the most celebrated and award-winning developers within the region, SkyWorld Development Sdn Bhd was also caught in the video dumping substantial solid as well as liquid wastes into the River of Life project area.

In one drone filmed video shared during the meeting covered all the area from Sri Rampai, Ayeh Leleh pond, Pulapol, Kampung Boyan pond all the way to Kampung Baru. The video showed substantial waste management from Sky World, private contractor and local stalls toward Sungai Bunus.

With new evidence began unfolding by itself, it would appear that the goal to increase the water quality within the River of Life project by 2018 is slowly becoming an impossible feat.

“To meet the 2018 deadline, we must commit ourselves further and commission greater and extensive river treatment works,” Datuk Najib, Haji Mohd Najib Nin Haji. Mohd, Executive Director of DBKL oponed.

“World River Day is not just about recognizing that polluted rivers require a clean-up mission, but it is a message to unite local authorities, government and non-government bodies, local communities as well as educating students to ignite the passion towards increasing the quality of life by empowering them the importance of water sources within a developing nation such as ours,” he added.

DBKL’s landscape department also mentioned that the Kampung Boyan pond, Seri Rampai pond, Titiwangsa pond and Air leleh pond will served as an alternative public recreation park when the infamous Titiwangsa Lake Garden is scheduled to close for maintenance next year. At the key of in this scenario, challenges as well as solutions were addressed and implemented by the local authorities to ensure that the use of these public recreation parks will be safe and secure and away from pollution’s harm.

Rapid urbanization over a period of time has seen a rise in untreated household sewage, solid waste and other industrial effluents. The polluted waterways have since affected public health and threatened the livelihood of young communities in Kuala Lumpur. In a Scream-O-Vision view, that’s the state of the world right now.

World River Day

An event held annually on the last Sunday of every September, the whole world is taking initiation as well as strives to increase public awareness of the importance of our water resources. The Sungai Bunus Community Committee, together with Local Agenda 21 (LA21) and DBKL organize a World River Day celebration in 4 locations along Sungai Bunus.

The celebration extended the initiative MOU signing ceremory with new partners. The first Projek Nadi Sungai Kehidupan Sg. Bunus was first signed on 28th September 2014 with 14 partners and the second was signed on 9th October 2016 with 9 additional partners.
