From October 5th to 8th, IGEM was held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre where the sessions were from 9.30am to 6pm on the respective days. IGEM aims to drive the green industry in Malaysia as well as keeping it parallel with the most current innovations and initiatives in the market. Besides, IGEM’s ultimate goal is towards positioning Malaysia as a Green Technology Hub for the Asean region. Carrying the theme ‘”Green Business for Sustainability”.

IGEM 2016 focused on five key areas of Green Energy, Green Transport, Green Building, Waste Technology & Management and Clean Water Technology & Management. Continuing the great legacy, IGEM 2016 is expected to push the boundaries by strengthening the status of Malaysia as a Green Technology Hub for the ASEAN region as well as generating more green business opportunities for the country.

The 4 day-event of IGEM is to raise awareness among the Malaysian people regarding the promising industry. But all events were carefully planned and executed accordingly with the guidance of the experts of that industry. The event was successful due to collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, the IGEM taskforce, MIDA and their media partners. Some points worth mentioning are:

  1. There were 350 participating companies from 20 different countries
  2. The total number of trade visitors were 33903 (42% increase compared to last year)
  3. 12 participating Malaysian states in the states pavilion
  4. 5 country group pavilions namely EUMCCI, China, Japan, Korea and Spain

The lessons to be learned from the IGEM event were ‘Green Awareness’ and ‘Green Innovation’. The word “Green” has entered our daily lives. We read about it in the news, see it on TV and hear about it on the radio, but what is it and how does it affect us? “Green” means fuel and energy efficiency, renewable and sustainable fuel source, and water conservation. Everyone wants to reduce energy costs while maintaining their lifestyle. Both employers and consumers want to be Green and reduce energy consumption. The aim of such event is to make us aware of the various methods employed in reducing energy consumption and conserving water. They want you to be knowledgeable about new technologies. There are many programs available to help people understand the concept of Go Green such as ‘Awakening the Dreamer Program’ and ESCO Institute where people take courses on how to utilize Green Innovations.

In conclusion environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. Promoting environmental awareness is an easy way to become an environmental steward and participate in creating a brighter future for our children. Once we have chosen our cause and figured out some beneficial activities, we should share it with the world! And IGEM is a great example of how this could be done. Get our communities, friends, and families involved. Use our political voice in our local city council and propose environmentally sustainable and beneficial projects. Start a community garden, buy from local stores and farmers markets, make our public transportation more efficient and/or start implementing clean energy strategies in our community centers.

It is more than likely that our children are learning about environmentalism in school, but it does not have to be limited to school grounds. Children learn a great deal at home and by using green practices we will be providing them with a strong foundation for environmental stewardship. Promoting environmental awareness is a crucial part of being an environmental steward. Start participating in the change and teach our community what it means to be sustainable.
